Following the success of last year's virtual European Film Festival, this year's edition will take place predominantly online from 14 to 24 October.

The 2021 European Film Festival is a partnership project of the Delegation of the European Union to South Africa and 17 European embassies and cultural agencies in South Africa: embassies of Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Ireland, Italy, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Ukraine and the British Council, the Portuguese Camoes Institute, the Diplomatic Mission of Flanders, the French Institute in South Africa, the Goethe-Institut and the Italian Cultural Institute. The festival is organized in cooperation with Cineuropa and coordinated by Creative WorkZone.

A selection of 18 films from Europe, 13 of which were directed by women, will be screened free of charge, and four new entrants - Czech Republic, Denmark (Oscar winner in 2021 for Best International Feature Film), Switzerland and Ukraine, special co-production Quo Vadis Aida nominated for Oscar Jasmila Žbanić - will complement the countries that were presented last year: Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Poland, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom, Portugal

The theme of this year's festival is Healing Journeys and this applies to both South Africa and Europe, where despite different contexts and history, there is a common experience and a common need for healing. These films present stories of hope, humanity and thought-provoking intrigue, showing new works by some of Europe’s most successful filmmakers. Please note that movies are geographically blocked only for viewing in South Africa. For film synopses, announcements and how to watch, visit www.eurofilmfest.co.za.
